Brazil bids for Olympic Games
Brazil is preparing to put in its bid for the 2016 Olympic Games this week, according to new reports.
Following the Latin American nation’s success last year in clinching the 2014 World Cup, it has now gained the confidence to hold the famous worldwide sporting event.
Officials in Rio de Janeiro say that the city will lay "much of the groundwork" to hold the Olympics when it prepares for the global soccer extravaganza – for which four new stadiums are being built.
State governor for Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral, said: "Rio is the favourite in among bettors in London, and no one wants to lose money.
"We’re leaving for Lausanne on Friday convinced that our bid will be accepted."
The Brazilian Olympic Committee will present its case to the International Olympic Committee on January 11th at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A decision will be made as to who will be the host city in October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
