Brazil to host women’s golf tournament
Brazil will host its first ever Ladies Professional Golf Association (LGPA)-sanctioned tournament next year, in news that may interest Brazilian property investors.
The inaugural HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup will be hosted by Brasil 1 at Itanhanga Golf Club, in Rio de Janeiro from January 24th-25th 2009.
Among 14 tour professionals and one leading amateur competing for total prize money of $500,000 (£346,000) will be Brazilians Angela Park and Candy Hanneman.
"It will be a great event and I’m sure the players will agree. This will also be a great opportunity for people in Brazil to get to know more about golf," said Ms Park, who won the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award in 2007.
The event will also be backed by the state government of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian Ministry of Sports.
It is another sporting coup for the country after it was selected to host the Fifa World Cup in 2014 last year.
