Brazilian cinema is ‘top tourist attraction’
The growing Brazilian film industry has become a major pull for travellers, according to new reports this week.
Secretary of tourism for Cabaceiras, a town in the north-east of Brazil, Gilsane Castro, told the Earth Times: "There is no doubt that cinema is, today, one of the top tourist attractions of the town.
"A local job market has been created. We have actors, camera operators, people who do make-up and even security teams," he added, describing the growth of the film industry in the area.
The paper reports that in the area, which has now become known as the "Brazilian Bollywood", over 23 films have been shot and "Roliude Nordestina", which translates to "Hollywood of the north-east", is emblazed in white letters on a near-by hillside.
Brazil, which is home to the renowned Sao Paulo International Film Festival, has experienced a strong year in cinematic terms.
One of the nation’s biggest producers, Conspiracao Filmes, announced the opening of its international division based in Hamburg back in September, boosting the Latin American country’s presence at European film festivals.
As Brazilian cinema edges towards centre stage, growing numbers of people across the globe have gained an insight into the culture of the nation.
This insight may have been a contributing factor in the record levels of foreign tourists who visited Brazil this August.
