Holidaymakers jet to Brazilian festival
Holidaymakers will be making their way to Brazil next month for the Candomble festival of St Barbara, according to new reports.
Described as a "religious spectacle not to be missed", the festival takes place in Salvador on December 4th and features a mix of elements from the Roman Catholic and Candomble religions in celebration of St Barbara.
St Barbara is the patron saint of the fire brigade and markets, and is also known in Bahian syncretism as the queen of thunder and lightening, providing an inspiring background for the festival.
During the day a procession will begin in the Pelourinho district and wind through other parts of Salvador, via the fire station, where it is greeted by sirens, then ending at the Baixa dos Sapateiros, which is the site of St Barbara’s market.
The event is a chance for travellers in the country to experience Brazil’s unique and vibrant culture regardless of their religion.
According to the Brazilian tourism institute, Embratur, foreign tourism figures exceeded those of 2006 in both August and October this year.
