President Lula reveals Amazon plan
A new scheme from Brazil’s president to reduce deforestation in the Amazon will give those living in the rainforest land titles.
The eco-friendly programme, which may boost the number of people wanting to buy Brazilian property, will also pay the habitants for preventing deforestation.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva intends the scheme to regulate land ownership and protect the country’s rainforest, which may please people with Brazilian property.
He added: "We need to think about how to make those people feel that they will make more money by planting trees than by cutting them down."
The premier added that while previously the country could deforest, the practice now works against Brazil.
Mr Lula da Silva said further deforestation would lead to a lack of international loans.
This new scheme coincides with Brazil’s plan, revealed last year, to cut Amazon deforestation by half in ten years.
Last year the Brazilian government also launched the Sustainable Amazon Plan, which aimed to create jobs in the north of the country.
