Salvador’s carnival ‘is more for Brazilian resident than tourists’
The annual carnival in Salvador brought around one billion reais (£0.34 billion) to the country this year, according to official estimates.
Each year around two million people descend on the city’s streets, with many people from overseas flying in and staying in Brazilian property to enjoy the event.
City officials stated that the event this year brought in lots of money for the local economy in addition to creating 215,000 temporary jobs, reported Reuters.
Speaking on comparisons with Rio’s carnival, Vera Ferreira, a Rio native who is a regular at Salvador’s Carnival, said that it is an event for Brazilian property owners rather than tourists.
"There’s no comparison … This is a carnival for the people, a true street carnival. Even though it’s becoming more commercial, it’s still the best carnival in the country," she told the source.
This weekend also saw the Rio carnival take place, which attracted celebrities like Madonna and actor Gerard Butler to the city’s streets.
