Surfing championship comes to Brazil
Brazil’s resort of Itacare has hosting the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour with a green twist.
The Itacare Town Council worked with organisers of the pro-surfing event to construct a contest site made from recycled materials on Tiririca beach.
To cool off, competitors used natural waterfall showers created from small forest streams, and the site offices were built from recycled plastic bricks and abandoned wood panelling.
Over 100 competitors took part in the contest, which took place in Itacare for the second year running.
The event and the $12,000 prize was eventually won by Samantha Cornish, after coming back from a break from surfing.
She said: "I feel pretty amazing. It’s awesome to finally break the ice and come back with a win after four years. To be up there in the world title race…is an honour and a privilege and I am going to go for it too!"
