Brazil leads the eco way

Environmentally-conscious people considering buying property in Brazil could be interested to hear that the Latin American nation is leading the way in sustainable energy production, it has been reported.

The United Nations (UN) highlighted the role Brazil is playing in a discussion about green power sources at the Global Renewable Energy Forum yesterday, according to ANBA.

Kandeh Yumkella, director general of the UN Organisation for Industrial Developemnt, called for other nations learn from the South American nation.

Jorge Samek, general director of Itaipu Binacional, said: "Our country is the world’s leading example of renewable electric power production. On the whole, 91 per cent of electric power consumed in Brazil in 2006 came from renewable energy."

"Now we have biomass, it is a blessing for the planet," he added.

The Brazilian firm runs the world’s largest operational hydroelectric plant on the Parana River along the country’s border with Paraguay.

More than 1,000 people from over 50 countries worldwide attended the meeting in the Southern city of Foz do Iguacu.
