Brazil property: Rio govt boosts security with extra policing
Rio de Janeiro’s state government is to implement a community policing programme across 40 new locations in the city with the aim of boosting security.
In news which could benefit Brazilian property investors, the project will involve modern methods of law enforcement, such as social intervention and interaction with young people.
The new scheme is designed to boost Rio de Janeiro’s bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the bid committee, said: "The Rio 2016 security proposals will ensure the execution of the Olympic Games with precision and technical excellence, and provide a legacy for the transformation of the city and country."
The project has already been rolled out across five communities in Rio and a recent study by research institution Fundacao Getulio Vargas showed that 80 per cent of residents felt safety and security had improved as a result.
Earlier this month, Brazil’s tourist minister announced that hotels in Rio de Janeiro are set to benefit from funding, which could amount to as much as $160 million (£99 million).
