Brazil ‘to become fish exporter’
Brazilian farms will soon be able to produce enough seafood for the country and will have the capability to become fish exporters, according to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In his weekly breakfast radio address to the nation, he recalled a visit to the country’s first sea ranch, saying it is expected to reach production of 10,000 tons of fish per year, ten times the current level for the whole of Brazil, Xinhua reports.
The farm is located 11km off the coast of Recife in the north-east of the country, Brazilian property investors may be interested to learn.
Over 1,000 families are benefiting from its output, President Lula da Silva stated.
"In some years, we will become great fish producers," he claimed, according to Xinhua.
The Brazilian government is currently aiming to stimulate industry to prevent the country from falling into recession and last week President Lula da Silva announced that one million new homes will be built by 2010 as part of this effort.
