Brazil wins bid to host the World Cup
Brazil has been successful in its bid to host the World Cup in 2014.
FIFA made the announcement yesterday, which is expected to have a positive effect on Brazil’s economy.
Brazil, which was the only country left in the final stages of the bidding, will now have to make preparations for the high volumes of travellers flying into the country, looking for quality hotels and entertainment during their stay for the football tournament.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that the organisation’s commission had been impressed by Brazil’s plans for the tournament, which include the construction of four new stadiums.
Mr Blatter also said that he hoped that the World Cup could encourage more Brazilian players to stay in domestic football.
He added: "This is the country that has given to the world the best football and the best footballers, five times world champions, and if we don’t stop the invasion of Brazilian footballers [to other leagues] then in years to come we may have only Brazilians in all the national teams."
Brazil, which will see a huge influx of visitors during the World Cup, already has a thriving tourist industry that is said to be growing at a rate of 7.2 per cent, making it the second largest tourist economy in South America, after Mexico.
