Brazilian property owners celebrate Olympic win
Brazilian property owners were celebrating in the streets this weekend after it was confirmed that Rio de Janeiro will be the host for the 2016 Olympics.
The country secured the win after a vote on Friday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), beating Madrid by 34 votes in the final round.
Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, congratulated the city on its win, adding that it had a "very strong technical bid".
He stated that Brazil built up an image of the Games being "a celebration of the athletes and sport, as well as providing the opportunity for the city, region and country to deliver their broader long-term aspirations for the future".
Voting for the host city took place over three rounds, with the first stage seeing the favourite Chicago eliminated and round two taking out Tokyo.
The 2016 Olympics will now be the first time the Games will be hosted in South America, which many said gave Brazil a boost in the voting.
