Brazilian property owners ’should learn Portuguese’
Brazilian property investors need to make sure that they learn Portuguese in order to get the most out of living in the country.
Jessica Mullins, speaking to Gringoes.com, said that having grown up in Switzerland and then living in Spain and the US, she did not speak a word of Portuguese before moving to property in Brazil.
"When I got here the first time … I spoke no Portuguese at all, I didn’t even know how to say ‘hi, my name is Jessica’, but I did a three-week intensive course as soon as I got here," she added.
Ms Mullins also commented that she picked up the language easily, becoming almost fluent before starting her university course in Rio de Janeiro.
She advised Brazilian property investors to mix with locals in order to pick up the language and local slang quickly.
The existence of the Portuguese language in Brazil is a legacy of the European colonisation of the Americas, with the first Portuguese settlers arriving in the country in the 16th century.
