Brazilian’s ‘Christ’ statue to be repaired
Brazil’s iconic statue, the Cristo Redentor do Corcovado, is set to get massive repairs under proposals being put forward by a working group.
Carlos Minc, minister of the environment, revealed the plans to restore the sculpture, which is one of the seven wonders of the modern world, according to Prensa Latina.
He said a timeline will be drawn up for the improvement works, which will receive government funding, the news provider reports.
"The Christ is a symbol of Brazil. If we can recover the area surrounding it … [and] increase attractions, the country’s earnings will grow," he asserted.
Mr Minc explained that the idea is for the deity to "open its arms over a green an ecological pasture".
The statue stands atop of Corcovado mountain, and can be seen from all over Rio de Janeiro.
It was originally built to represent Christ looking down on the people of the city and watching over them.
