Brazil’s foreign affairs minister meets Hillary Clinton
The first meeting between a Brazilian governmental representative and a member of the Obama administration has taken place, laying the groundwork for the President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s visit to the US later this year.
Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state, met Brazil’s foreign affairs minister Celso Amorim in Washington.
"I tried to underline the significance for the United States of the political-changes moment in the region, the great diversity of changes towards Cuba," said Mr Amorim after the meeting.
He described the discussion as "positive and friendly" and asserted that the US and Brazil will "coordinate their positions" prior to the G20 summit which will is being hosted by London in April.
Mr Amorim concluded that Mrs Clinton "took note of everything I said".
The meeting is the latest in a number of recent efforts by Brazilian leaders to maintain foreign relations, with visits from the Chinese vice president and the Libyan leader last month.
