China becomes Brazil’s biggest trade partner
China became Brazil’s biggest trading partner in April, replacing the US in a historic development, according to a new report.
The ministry of development, industry and exterior trade revealed that Brazil’s imports and exports with China amounted to $3.2 billion (£2.1 billion) last month, over the $2.8 billion figure on deals with the US.
Welber Barrel, secretary for foreign trade, said it was the first time China had become the top trade partner for Brazil.
He added that the country is aiming to diversify its exports to the Asian country, which are currently concentrated on basic goods.
Meanwhile, Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has asserted that the country will emerge from the international financial crisis in an "extraordinary manner".
The South American leader stated that he was optimistic about the financial markets, saying recent good results registered in the main economic indicators showed that Brazil would soon emerge from the global downturn, Xinhua news agency reported.
