El-Salvador president-elect ‘to visit Brazil’
El Salavador’s new president Mauricio Funes is to visit Brazil this week, fresh from his victory in the country’s elections at the weekend, it is reported.
Officials from his party, Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, said he will meet Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday, according to Agence France-Presse.
The Salvadoran president-elect has associated himself closely with his Brazilian counterpart and has also expressed his desire to maintain his country’s relationship with the US, the news provider reports.
Mr Funes, a former TV journalist, became the first left-wing candidate to be elected as leader of the nation in 20 years, following a growing trend of Latin American countries changing political side, including Brazil.
He beat Rodrigo Avila, of ruling right-wing party the National Republican Alliance on Sunday.
Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been visiting the US over the last few days, meeting the new US leader Barack Obama and giving a speech to business leaders in New York.
