Boeing has predicted that Latin American airlines will need an extra 1,730 aeroplanes worth $120 billion (£60 billion) over the next 20 years.
Latin America will account for around four per cent of commercial airline deliveries, measured in dollars, between 2006 and 2026, Boeing said at the Latin America Airfinance Conference in Rio de Janeiro this week.
Air travel in the continent is set to increase by 6.6 per cent annually and by 2026 it will have a commercial fleet of more than 2,420 planes, reflecting the continent's growing tourist industry and emerging property markets, in countries such as Brazil.
Over the next 20 years, Boeing predicts a $2.8 trillion (£1.4 trillion) worldwide market for new commercial aircraft.
This figure amounts to approximately 28,600 new aircraft, which would double the world fleet by 2026, with the vast majority of these aeroplanes in the single-aisle and twin-aisle categories.
Brazilian airlines, TAM, has already expanded its fleet this year after receiving 18 new aircraft. The airline will end 2007 with 111 planes and has the youngest fleet of planes in Brazil averaging at 7.1 years.
