Brazil Property News: Brazil attracts big spending tourists

20th December 2007 02:35

Brazil attracts tourists who spend more money than your average traveller, according to new reports.

New figures released by the country's Ministry of Tourism reveal that 29.1 per cent of tourists who come to the country do so for business, industry events and conferences.

This 29.1 per cent is the group of tourists who spend the most in the country, with each traveller paying out around $165.14 (£82.07) per day compared with the $73.53 (£37.24) per day which is spent by leisure tourists.

President of the Brazilian tourism institute, Embratur, Jeanine Pires said that the news was very positive for the Latin American country.

He told Brazilian-Arab news agency Anba: "This is very good, and it follows the economic development of the country."

Embratur has been working over recent years to increase the number of foreign tourists the country attracts.

Its efforts have been seemingly successful as in 2003 Brazil was 21st in the world in terms of attracting international events to the country, but by 2006 the country had elevated itself to 7th in the world.

Ms Pires claims that this type of "business tourism" helps to balance the seasonality of some destinations, in the south for example, when the climate is cooler.
