Brazil Property News: Brazil celebrates 100 years of Japanese immigration

17th June 2008 04:30

Property investors considering Brazil real estate could be interested to hear how the Japanese are a vibrant part of the country.

The Japanese wave of immigration into Brazil began in 1908 when the Kasato Maru pulled into Santos port carrying 781 peasant farmers aboard from the Asian country, Reuters reports.

In order to drive its economy, Brazil needed workers for coffee plantations as it had only abolished slavery 20 years earlier.

This week will see celebrations of that historic day being marked by the visit of Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito to the South American country, the report continues.

Despite its economy not booming to the extent it is enjoying today, Japanese immigrants were lured to Brazil by the money they could make.

Jorge Nishimura, the son of a 98-year-old Japanese immigrant living in Brazil, told the news provider: "One of the things they used to tell people to lure them here is that in Brazil you could find money hanging from the trees."

Meanwhile, it was reported by Bloomberg earlier in the month that Fitch Ratings revealed the Latin American nation's export diversity meant it was a reliable place to invest.
