Brazil Property News: Brazil confirms Olympic bid

12th September 2007 10:53

The Brazilian Olympic Committee will attempt to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The committee confirmed the bid last night on their website, verifying that they had now handed in all the necessary documents to the International Olympics Committee (IOC) on Friday, just six days before the deadline.

Among the official papers were documents signed by President Luiz Inacio Da Silva and Rio de Janeiro state governor, Sergio Cabral.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of Brazil's Olympic Committee, spoke of the importance of organisation and co-operation between the different levels of government in Brazil to the 2016 bid.

"It is important to make provisions for any potential problems in advance as well as obtain guarantees from the three levels of government for this project," he said.

Following its bid to host the 2008 Olympics, the Brazilian city has undertaken a number of major works, including the construction of an Olympic village, four new stadiums and the renovation of a further ten.

The International Olympic Committee will announce which country's bid is successful in hosting the 2016 Olympic Games in Copenhagen on October 9, 2009.
