Brazil Property News: Brazil leader Lula calls for action on financial speculation

15th June 2009 17:18

Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called for international business leaders to take a stand against financial speculation during a summit on the impact of the economic crisis on jobs.

In a speech to labour, employer and government representatives at the International Labour Organization, a United Nations Agency, Mr Lula da Silva said that the crisis had created an opportunity for global economies to work together.

"We cannot afford to live with a financial system that speculates," he told delegates at the summit.

Earlier, speaking to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council in Geneva, he told representatives from the UN's 47 member states that he hoped a global order would emerge from the crisis, one which rewards more stable forms of investment.

This week, President Lula da Silva will be meeting with leaders from the other so-called Bric nations - Russia, India and China - in their first formal summit, as they seek a louder voice on the global stage.
