Brazil Property News: Brazil pushes for world environment agency

5th September 2007 05:20

Brazil has come forward with proposals for a world environmental body.

As the UN discusses ways for promoting environmental issues and climate change-tackling initiatives, the Brazilian environment minister is calling for a UN body along the lines of the World Trade Organisation and the World Health Organisation.

Marina Silva plans for an 'umbrella organisation' overseeing the work of existing programmes, following in the footsteps of the World Trade Organisation and the World Health Organisation.

Brazil has been at the forefront of the fight against climate change in recent years with its work to preserve the Amazon rain forest and the extensive use of ethanol and biofuels over oil and petrol.

Marcelo Furtado, director of campaigns for Greenpeace in Brazil told the Associated Press: "What Brazil is doing with this proposal is making the success of this idea depend on the rich countries: Either you put up more money or you let us have more say in how the projects are carried out."
