Brazil Property News: Brazil to become 'self-sufficient in gas'

24th January 2008 04:11

Brazil should become self-sufficient in gas following its recent discovery of oil, say industry experts.

Following state-owned Petrobras' recent second discovery of oil off the coast of Rio de Janeiro Brazil's Minister of Mines and Energy has forecasted a new independence for the Latin American nation.

Edison Lobão said: "[The discovery of] this field will help us reach independence in the sector… In terms of gas, there are gigantic proportions."

Petrobras has discovered two major oil fields over recent months.

Tupi, the first, is estimated to be worth around 40 per cent of Brazil's total oil reserve, and the new field, Jupiter, is estimated to be around the same size.

The oil firm now says it will continue digging around the area the two fields were discovered in for more oil.

Brazil's property market has also experienced a boom over recent years, with analysts tipping the Latin American nation as a key emerging market.

This week Samantha Gore, who is head of sales and marketing for property agent uv10, said: "The wise investor will opt for an overseas property investment where tenants and headaches are handled by a rental management company."

She added that in north-east Brazil uv10 has several such developments on offer and, with year-round sunshine and no real "off" season, demand for rental accommodation is growing fast.
