Brazilian tourism has achieved its best year in history, according to economic figures from the country's central bank.
Expenditure by visitors to the country totalled the highest ever amount - some $4.95 billion (around £2.5 billion), reports the Brazil-Arab News Agency.
December proved to be a record monthly high with tourism revenues reaching £469 million, the bank's figures revealed.
Taking into account exchange operations and international credit card expenditures, the annual figure constituted a 14.76 per cent increase on 2006, the article noted.
The Brazilian Tourism Institute (BTI) has reportedly commented that holidaymakers currently stay in the country for around 20 days, spending an average of $91.7 each day (£40.4)
Tourists are staying for longer periods and spending more money compared to previous years, added Jeanine Pires, president of the BTI.
Bahia, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara are the areas currently popular among British-based foreign property buyers, according to the Times.
