Brazil Property News: Brazil will become 'international creditor'

18th October 2007 02:07

Brazil will become an international creditor by 2008, according to a former politician.

Luiz Carlos Mendonça de Barros, a one-time minister in the Brazilian government, made the announcement during a speech he gave to the Arab Brazilian Chamber this week about the Brazilian economy.

The hedge funds manager said that within the next year foreign reserves should become greater than foreign debt, an achievement he attributed to an increase in the Brazilian trade balance surplus and good commerce relations with China.

Barros told the Brazilian-Arab news agency ANBA: "The advantage of greater imports is that consumption may rise and, even if the national productive capacity does not follow it, part of the demand is supplied by foreign products, reducing inflation."

He also highlighted the recent increase of the minimum wage as another indicator of economic health.

According to industry analysts, Brazil's growing economy has encouraged many property investors to purchase real estate in the country, as property prices are anticipated to rise sharply over the next few years.
