Brazil Property News: Brazilian broadband connections rise

17th September 2007 12:58

There were 493,000 new broadband connections in Brazil during this year's second quarter, indicating a major rise in internet access.

According to Cisco's broadband barometer, at the end of June 2007 there were 6.54 million broadband connections in the country.

Statistics have shown Brazilians to be keen internet users. Social networking sites such as Orkut – an international social networking site, on which Brazilians account for 57 per cent of users according to MSNBC – have been popular with the nation, with other sites such as Facebook and MySpace being quick to take off.

Adam Seifer, co-founder of picture swapping network, Fotolog said: "Brazilians are not just heavy internet users but seem very experimental…that's got to bode well for any online product."

The news comes as Bloomberg announced over the weekend that Brazilian electricity regulator Aneel plans to auction licenses to build 1,200 miles of new power lines, which will span 10 states.

Licenses will be auctioned on November 7th and winning bidders have 21 months following this to build the lines, which will improve Brazil's infrastructure and ability to connect to telecommunications networks throughout the country.
