Brazil Property News: Brazilian film industry expands in Europe

18th September 2007 08:53

One of Brazil's biggest producers is opening an international division of his company in Germany.

Conspiracao Filmes will relocate its head quarters in Hamburg, with company partner Leonardo Monteiro de Barros overseeing operations, reports Variety magazine.

The European office will negotiate international co-productions and boost the company's presence at European film festivals, which include Venice, Berlin and Cannes.

The company, which was founded in 1991, has produced 11 features, with others currently in post-production and now hopes to reach out to an international audience.

Mr Barros said the company was particularly interested in breaking into the Spanish and English-language market, as well as promoting Brazilian cinema across throughout the continent.

"We believe there's a potential for Brazilian talent in non-Portuguese films. And co-production alliances are a great way to internationalise and make bigger films," he added.

Brazilian cinema has been under the international spotlight in recent times following Walter Salles' direction of the underground hit The Motor Cycle Diaries, underlining Brazil's strengthening international status.
