Tourism in Brazil accounts for a staggering 8.1 million jobs across the country's economy, a new study shows.
The research, entitled "Economy of tourism: Macroeconomic perspectives 2000-2005", has been published by the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute.
It found that tourism grew by a massive 16.26 per cent between 2004 and 2005.
However, the report pointed out that more than half 59.23 per cent of these jobs are "informal". Many of these workers are independent contractors, but over a million are working without a formal contract of employment.
Once considered a mainstream destination only for Portuguese and Spanish-speaking travellers, Brazil now features on many holidaymakers' must-visit lists.
The sheer scale of the tourism industry in the country both reflects and stems from that trend.
The report suggests that the variety of different kinds of experience Brazil can offer, for budget travellers as well as those looking for luxury, explains its resilience through the five years examined.
