Brazil Property News: Brazilians give green light for telecoms

24th October 2007 04:09

Brazilian regulators have given the green light to a major telecoms deal.

The communications regulator for the country, Anatel, has allowed the Spanish firm Telefonica SA and its Italian partners to buy a controlling stake in Telecom Italia SpA, removing a major hurdle to the $5.8 billion (£2.9 billion) deal.

Conditions outlined by the regulator stipulate that the companies must maintain their Brazilian cell phone operations as separate entities, ensuring healthy competition in this sector continues to prosper in Brazil.

An improving communication infrastructure is often seen as a major indicator of a country's economic progression.

During this year's second quarter there were 493,000 new broadband connections in Brazil and according to Cisco's broadband barometer there were 6.54 million broadband connections in the country by the end of June 2007.

Last month, Anatel announced plans to auction licenses to build 1,200 miles of new power lines, which will span ten states across the country.

The licenses will be auctioned on November 7th and the winning bidders will have 21 months following this to build the lines which will allow more people in Brazil to connect to telecommunication networks.
