Brazil Property News: Brazil's newest airline buys 36 aircraft

28th March 2008 02:53

Brazil's newest airline has bought 36 aircraft this week.

The airline, which has yet to be named, placed the order with fellow Brazilian aviation company Embraer, with an option for a further 40 units.

Founder of US discount carrier JetBlue Airways, David Neeleman, is behind the new airline and he has promised to tap into the nation's expanding appetite for flying.

He said: "Our target market is the 150 million passengers who travel annually by long-distance bus, as well as those, who for lack of a convenient alternative, don't travel at all."

The airline will begin operating in early 2009 using 118-seat Embraer aircraft and has $150 million (£75 million) worth of investment behind it.

Embraer's 195 aircraft has an autonomy of over 4,000 kilometres and will be configured as single class, with two leather seats on each side of the plane's aisle.

The first of these aircraft are due to be delivered in December 2008.
