An Olympic gold medallist has invested in Brazilian property.

Cycling champion Chris Hoy has treated himself to a luxury holiday home in the Latin American nation.

The athlete has opted to buy a Brazilian property in the coastal region of Natal.

"Brazil is one of the world's fastest growing emerging markets and its north east region is undergoing a massive boom in tourism. For me, the investment potential is incredible," he explained.

Meanwhile, England football legend David Beckham opened a football academy in the north-east Brazilian region at the start of this year.

In other news that could be of interest to those buying property in Brazil, the Financial Times reported this week that the Latin American nation's banks have weathered the global meltdown.

Due to paying the price for their own banking crises in previous years, the country's financial institutions are able to avoid the global storm with "relative comfort", the publication.
