Brazil Property News: Earthwave in Brazil sets new record

19th September 2007 11:12

Brazil has set the world record for the “most surfers riding one wave simultaneously” as part of the Earthwave project.

The record was achieved when 84 surfers at Quebra Mar in Santos successfully rode a wave together at the weekend, taking the record from Cape Town which had broken the previous record of 44 earlier in the day with 71.

Earthwave is an initiative that unites the talents of the global surfing community to highlight the issue of climate change.

The project, inspired by Al Gore’s recent film An Inconvenient Truth, was created by the Cape Town-based Kahuna Surfing Academy and aims to break world records to raise awareness of this issue.

Co-creator of the Earthwave global surf challenge, Paul Botha, commented: “What a fantastic achievement by Rico, the Earthwave Brazil participants, the sponsors and the City of Santos to nearly double the record.”

The event was sponsored by one of Brazil’s largest road concession companies, Ecorodivias and was attended by the mayor of Santos amongst other Brazilian celebrities and businessmen.
