9th April 2008 04:08

A Brazilian aviation manufacturer has announced record orders for the first quarter of 2008.

In a report released today, Embraer revealed that its firm order backlog had increased by $1.5billion (£750 million) to a record of $20.3bn.

The figure was for the commercial aviation, executive aviation, and defence and government segments of its business.

A total of 45 jets were delivered between January and March.

Embraer also signed a contract for the sale of 36 Embraer 195 jets with Brazil's newest airline, yet to be named, which is commanded by businessman David Neeleman – the founder of US low-cost airline JetBlue airways.

A company statement said: "After delivering a record number of aircraft in 2007, Embraer continues to implement improvements on its industrial processes, confirming the commitment assumed with its shareholders, customers and suppliers."

Embraer is the world's fourth-largest aircraft manufacturer and produced 169 planes in 2007.
