Brazil Property News: Foreign tourists spend $4.4 billion in Brazil

24th December 2007 12:16

Foreign tourists have spent $4.484 billion (£2.242 billion) in Brazil this year, according to new reports.

The Brazilian Central Bank has released figures that show growth of 19.91 per cent in tourists' spending in the country compared with spending in 2006, reports Brazilian Arab news agency ANBA.

By the end of the year the bank predicts that spending by foreign tourists in Brazil will have totaled over $5 billion (£2.5 billion), indicating the strength of the Latin American country’s tourist industry.

The Brazilian Minister of Tourism, Marta Suplicy, said in a press release issued by the Brazilian tourism institute, Embratur: "Tourism accounts for an expressive share of the balance of trade, as it is the fifth item in the export basket."

Only iron ore, raw petroleum, soybean production and automobiles bring more trade into the country than tourism.

The president of Embratur, Jeanine Pires, added: "Today, visitors will spend around $91.74 (£46.37) per day, in an average stay of 18.19 days. Two years ago, they would spend less and stay less than this."
