18th June 2008 04:19

Emerging markets' broadband internet subscribers could rise from 250 million to 2.2 billion in the next five years, one industry giant has said.

According to Ericsson the Latin American market will drive growth in emerging markets as it booms, reports ITPro.

Torbjorn Possne, the firm's senior vice president of sales and marketing, told a news conference the current 350 million fixed-line broadband subscribers could double by 2013.

People considering buying property in Brazil could be interested to hear the country is a leader in the Latin American broadband market and its broadband infrastructure is still improving.

A recent Research and Markets report revealed the region had a compound growth rate of more than half (54 per cent) from 2003 to 2007.

Brazilian telecoms firm Embratel announced earlier in the year it was close to completing an implementation of a broad WiMax network in 12 cities.

Cisco revealed last year that broadband connections in the South American country were booming.
