Some 40 million reasis (£12.5 million) is to be spent revamping roads in the city of Rio in the run up to the 2014 World Cup.
The funding, which comes from the National Tourism Development Program, will also be used to build brand new roads between Capelinha and Visconde de Maua and between Vila de Visconde de Maua and Maringa, in the mountainous region of the state, reports Brazzil Magazine.
Part of the funds will go to the municipalities of Paraty, Cunha, Itatiaia and Resende.
Tourism minister Luiz Barretto has stated that the construction work will begin in August, in order to ready the region for the onslaught of tourists which accompany the football tournament, adds the publication.
It quotes the minster as saying: "This will provide economic dynamism, which is very important, to the tourism industry. The hotel sector is going to grow, as well as the restaurant sector, and that should lead to an expansion of tourism in this region of the state."
