Brazil Property News: Pop star minister steps down

31st July 2008 05:03

Renowned Brazilian singer and composer Gilberto Gil has resigned from his high-profile job as the country's culture minister.

The Grammy Award winner said he wanted to spend more time on his musical career and on his family following six years in his official position.

Investors seeking Brazilian property could be interested in the development, which marks the end of the political career of one of the country's most famous pop stars.

Inacio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, has twice before persuaded Gil not to resign but appears to have failed on the third occasion.

Gil said: "I am leaving the government to dedicate more time to my artistic endeavours and to my family, which is growing with the addition of a new grandchild"

The artist is credited with helping to found the Tropicalia movement in the 1960s and sang and danced with visiting US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice in March, according to ABC News.

He is known for boosting the profile of the ministry of culture and for improving its budget.
