Brazil Property News: Rio closer to 2016 Games?

31st October 2008 06:00

Those considering buying property in Brazil could be interested to hear that the minister of tourism claims that Rio de Janeiro has taken a step closer to becoming the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Luiz Barretto maintains the term of membership signed this week by the hotel network application could give Rio the edge over Tokyo, Chicago, Madrid and other candidate cities.

Mr Barretto said: "The accession shows the commitment of the hotel network with the campaign Rio 2016.

"The city has shown to have all the conditions to achieve an event of that size. And will [receive] any assistance from the Ministry of Tourism for that dream to become reality."

Mr Barretto concluded that should Rio be successful in its application to host the Olympics in 2016, it will be celebrated all over the region as the first ever games held in South America.

In other news, Brazil and Tunisia are discussing a research project to develop plants with resistance to droughts.
