Brazil Property News: Rio in last 7 for Olympic bid

14th September 2007 03:31

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced today that Rio de Janeiro is on the seven-city short list of countries still in the running to host the 2016 Olympic games.

Also on the list to host the 31st Olympics, put forward by supporting body National Olympic Committees (NOCs), are Baku (Azerbaijan), Chicago (USA), Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic) and Tokyo (Japan).

The IOC was due notification from the NOCs by September 13th that a city within their jurisdiction had applied.

These cities will now proceed to phase one of the application process, known as the Candidature Acceptance Procedure, which involves a review of each city's organisational capabilities and a questionnaire – the answers to which will be analysed by the IOC.

If the Brazilian city is successful in this stage it will then enter phase two where candidates submit an in-depth description of their project to the IOC evaluation committee.

Rio de Janeiro has strengthened its facilities since its 2008 Olympic bid with the construction of an Olympic village, building four new stadiums and the renovation of another ten.

The successful host will not be named until 2009.
