Sao Paulo is leading the battle against "visual pollution", according to new reports.
The Brazilian city has banned all billboards, neon signs and electronic panels as part of the new Clean City law, with Rio de Janeiro considering following suit.
Passed in September 2006 by a margin of 45 votes to one, the Clean City law aims to make Sao Paulo a more attractive place to tourists, residents and investors alike.
In the US, billboards are already banned in Vermont, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska with local legislators in Austin, Texas and San Francisco proposing bans at various points.
Brazil announced this month that is has launched a new marketing campaign to boost tourism levels in popular regions such as Sao Paulo.
Americans are the prime target of this campaign as they account for the largest percentile of foreign tourists to the Latin American country.
Embratur, the Brazilian tourist board, has set a target of attracting 1.2 million US visitors by 2010 and has invested $1.6 billion (£0.8 billion) into achieving this goal.
