Brazil Property News: Sao Paulo is the scene for Oscar-tipped film

12th October 2007 11:25

Sao Paulo is the setting for a film tipped to compete for the title of Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Oscars.

The minister of culture for Brazil made the announcement after critics selected the Year My Parents Went on Vacation for indication at the next Academy awards.

Directed and written by Brazilian-born Cao Hamburger, the film focuses on the town of Bom Retiro and works to better understand the Latin American country's history and the factors that have contributed towards Sao Paulo's growth.

The film won the best fiction award at the Rio de Janeiro Festival and the Sao Paulo International Cinema Show last year and also competed at the 57th Berlin Film Festival.

If it were to be nominated for an Academy award, the film could bring further exposure of Latin America's biggest economy to the US and Europe.

Access to these continents has been greatly improved over recent months following the introduction of new flight routes.

Brazilian airline VRG will open a new direct flight route between Sao Paulo and London this month and low-cost airline Gol has formed an alliance with AirFrance, which allows the European operator to sell tickets to any of Gol's 58 South American destinations.
