Brazil Property News: Sarkozy calls for Brazil to be in G8

3rd September 2007 12:59

French president Nicolas Sarkozy is calling for Brazil to join the G8 group of industrial countries.

In recognition of Brazil's increasing world standing and its predicted economic growth in coming years, Mr Sarkozy is suggesting that the country, along with South Africa, China, Mexico and India, join the club for the world's biggest economies.

The move would see the G8 become the G13 and represent a broader range of global issues.

"The G8 should continue its slow transformation," Mr Sarkozy said in a speech to French ambassadors. "I want the G8 to become the G13."

In the French head of state's first foreign policy speech after taking power, he also called for Brazil to take a seat on the UN Security Council.

He said: "France demands new permanent members - Germany, Japan, India, Brazil - and fair representation for Africa."
