Brazil Property News: Surfing fans fly in for international surfing event

1st February 2008 03:50

Surfing fans will fly into Brazil next month for the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) event.

The Hang Loose Pro Contest 2008 round will be held at Fernando de Noronha, which is also considered one of the best scuba diving locations in Brazil.

Fans will see surfing champs Pablo Paulino, who won the World Pro Junior title last year, and Bruna Shmitz, who also started the season well with a second place at the Roxy Surf Festival, battle it out on Brazil's beaches.

The surfers will be able to win $110,000 (£55,000) in prize money as well as gain 2,500 points for the World Qualifying Series ratings.

Earlier this week Tom Falcao, general manager of the tourist office of the Brazilian Embassy in London, said the country, with its sandy beaches, is a top tourist destination.

Mr Falcao explained: "For young people, it's famous in Brazil that we use the beach as a place for sport where young people can play basketball and football.

"[It is attractive for] older people as well, as there are lots of spas in several states in Brazil."

However, he said that Rio de Janeiro has always been the country's "visitor postcard" as it is "tremendously beautiful".
