Brazil Property News: Tourism earnings in Brazil reach 'historic high'

20th February 2008 09:54

Tourism earnings in Brazil achieved a "historic record" during 2007, it has been revealed.

Data published by the Brazilian Central Bank has confirmed what analysts had previously predicted – 2007 was the best year in the history of Brazilian tourism in terms of foreign visitors' expenditure in the country.

The inflow of $469 million (£234.5 million) into Brazil in December alone helped the Latin American nation reach $4.953 billion (£2.47 billion) in revenue, brought in by foreign tourism during the year in total.

It is a 14.76 per cent increase compared with the $4.316 billion (£2.15 billion) recorded in 2006.

Marta Suplicy, Brazil's minister for tourism, said: "This is great news to celebrate, stressing the importance of tourism - now the fifth item on the exports agenda - to the Brazilian economy."

Jeanine Pires, the president of the Brazilian institute for tourism, Embratur, also commented on the newly released figures.

She said: "The Brazilian Central Bank's data confirms that when visitors now come to Brazil they stay longer and spend more than ever before."

Earlier this week, Air Canada announced that it is expanding its Brazilian holiday programme for 2008, after the Latin American destination emerged as one of the airline's best-sellers last year.
