Brazil Property News: Tourists to spend $10bn in Brazil

25th March 2008 04:14

Tourists are expected to spend $10 billion (£5 billion) in Brazil by 2010, according to the country's institute of tourism, Embratur.

Embratur's chairman Jeanine Pires made the claim when unveiling the second phase of the Aquarela Plan to a conference of businessmen in Rio de Janeiro last week.

She told the delegates that in 2007 the total visitor spend was £2.5 billion. Furthermore, during January 2008 alone foreign tourists had spent £300 million in the Latin American nation.

According to Ms Pires, 98 per cent of tourists who visit Brazil say that they want to return to visit other areas of the nation and that they would recommend the country to other visitors.

She explained: "Therefore, it is up to us to make the world know the opportunities the country offers."

The Aquarela Plan was launched in 2005 and aims to increase the number of international tourists visiting Brazil per year from 5.5 million to 7.9 million by 2010.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, Brazil should be among the top ten countries in the world that generate the most jobs in tourism by 2018.

In related news, Embratur announced plans this week to use its fashion industry to encourage travellers to visit the Latin American nation.
