Brazil Property News: Unasur leaders sign

23rd May 2008 04:11

South American leaders are scheduled to meet today (May 23rd) in Brazil to sign the legal structure of the charter for the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), it has emerged.

Unasur –first discussed at a 2005 meeting of regional leaders as the South American Community of Nations – consists of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam and Uruguay.

The treaty aims to integrate the region's immigration policies, energy and transportation networks and, according to the Brazilian foreign ministry, to establish a South American parliament in Bolivia.

All the country's leaders will be present at the signing with the exception of Uruguay and Bolivia, who will send their vice-president and foreign affairs minister.

Unasur is modelled on the European Union and is intended to give the region "more international clout and a platform for faster economic growth", reports Reuters.

It was reported yesterday that Brazil is leading the way in sustainable energy production, as the United Nations called for other countries to learn from the South American nation.
