Brazil Property News: Uranium exports 'a potential money maker' for Brazil

24th November 2008 03:45

Brazil is well placed to take advantage of the growth in global demand for uranium, according to Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB).

Efforts by the developed world to swap oil-fired power stations for environmentally-friendly alternatives are seeing more countries, including the UK, investigating the extent to which they can utilise nuclear power.

As it is rich in uranium resources, Brazil could profit from the shift, INB's superintendent of mineral production Adriano Maciel Tavares said.

In comments reported by Brazzil Mag, he explained the country has more than enough uranium for its own needs and that it has the potential to increase output at its mines.

Should the government agree to back the uranium industry, Mr Tavares continued, Brazil could be exporting $200 million worth of the mineral by 2013.

His views come at a time when the Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras is looking to step up its production of oil derivatives in a bid to increase exports.
