Brazil Property News: Vivo vies for 3G licences in Brazil

3rd October 2007 01:00

Mobile phone operator Vivo Participacoes will bid for nationwide 3G licences in Brazil, according to reports.

"We are interested in acquiring one of the national third generation licences," Vivo's chairman Roberto Lima told Brazilian news agency Lusa.

Auctioning of 3G licences by the Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel is expected to occur later this year and will create a lucrative market for mobile operators in the country.

This week Portugual Telecom has announced its interest in buying Spanish mobile operator Telefonica's stake in Vivo.

"I know perfectly well Telefonica is interested in buying PT's 50 per cent stake but Telefonica also knows PT is interested in buying its 50 per cent," PT chief executive Henrique Granadeiro told Portuguese Diario Economico.

The anticipation of competitive bids for the licences reflects the keenness of mobile operators to enter the growing Brazilian telecoms market.

Communications infrastructures are growing rapidly in Latin America’s largest economy with over 493,000 new Brazilian broadband connections in 2006 alone.

The country’s developing communications infrastructure is good for property and tourist industries alike as it gives a wider audience access to these markets.
