Summer events in Brazil
With the summer weather in the UK being unpredictable at best, anyone with property in Brazil would be advised to spend at least a couple of weeks enjoying the South American nation’s sunshine and the multitude of events taking place across July and August.
It may be Brazil’s off-peak months during this period, but this means there will be fewer crowds to battle with as you enjoy the range of arts events, festivals and exhibitions. And with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to the low 30s even during the winter months, July and August could prove the best time to enjoy your property in Brazil.
The majority of the events taking place during July and August are aimed firmly at culture vultures and celebrate the artistic side of Brazil.
Taking place from July 15th until the 27th, there is Cinesul, the Ibero-American Festival of Cinema and Video in Rio de Janeiro, which sees fictional and documentary films being screened across the city. There is also a moviemaking exhibition in the beautiful Botanic Gardens and the opportunity to take part in a number of workshops and seminars for budding filmmakers.
Film-lovers will also enjoy the 21st annual Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival, which takes place between August 19th and 27th. Both home-grown and international films will be showcased at the event, which is one of the largest of its kind in Latin America.
For people looking for something a bit sportier, the yearly Brazilian Grand Prix Horse Race can make an enjoyable day out. Taking place at the Gavea Hippodrome in Rio de Janeiro between July 31st and August 2nd, the three-day event sees several races taking place, however the highlight is undoubtedly the Grand Prix on the second day.
Rio de Janeiro is also home to the annual Car Show, which takes place between July 16th and 18th and sees a varied range of cars including classic models, sports cars, and competitive vehicles on display, which should be enough to satisfy any petrol head.
For people who want to learn a little more about the variety of cultures within Brazil there is the annual Japanese Festival, which takes place at the Centro de Exposicoes Imigrantes in Sao Paulo from July 16th. Thousands of visitors turn out to the event each year to sample traditional dancing, tea ceremonies, martial art displays and origami exhibitions.
Similarly, the Italian communities within Brazil are also celebrated during August and September with the Festa de Nossa Senhora de Achiropita which takes place on weekends throughout the months in Sao Paulo’s Italian neighbourhood, Bixiga. The event is dedicated to Our Lady of Achiropita and includes a number of processions done souvenir stall-lined streets. However, the main attraction on the event is the wide variety of food on offer, ranging from traditional polenta dishes to delicious pizzas and pastas.
Last but certainly not least, Brazil is perhaps best known for its wide variety of festivals and, while many take place during the nation’s peak months, there are carnival celebrations to be found all year round.
The Fortal carnival in Fortaleza takes place from July 25th and features four days of music, dancing and fun. Widely considered to be the biggest out of season festival in Brazil and regularly attracting half a million participants, the carnival is a must-do event for anyone with property in Brazil.
